So I'm posting an interesting snippet from an interview back in Season 3 that now seems very relevant. :)

Nice cryptic teasing analogy! Last question. Don't tell my wife, but I have a crush on Mrs. Hawking, the creepy old lady from Desmond's flashbacks who knows all about his future.

LINDELOF: Huh. I don't even know how to respond to that.

There is no other response other than telling me whether I'll be seeing her again before the end of the season.

CUSE: Can we just back up half a second? Once you say something like that, Jeff, it can't be unsaid.

LINDELOF: Unless you travel back in time, like Mrs. Hawking does. But no, you won't be seeing her before the end of the season — but you will be seeing her again.

That's right, Ms. Hawking can travel through time. What Do They Mean?

As I'm sure you all know by now, the official premiere date for season 5 of 'Lost' is Jan. 21. Can't wait! It'll be a 3 hour extravaganza, with a 1 hour clip show and then the first 2 episodes back to back.

Speaking of those first episodes - the titles of the first 6 episodes have already been released. They're intriguing to say the least. I've got some theories on what they might mean, and what those episodes might be about. Note: I am aware that the producers have said there will no longer be flashbacks or forwards per se, but I imagine each episode will still focus on 1 character (or perhaps a select few) just for ease in storytelling.

Ep 1: "Because You Left"

*Islander-centric. Could be anyone's point of view, or could be several points of view (more likely, I think, since they'll probably show what happened to the those on the island as well as Faraday at sea).

For once, I think 'Lost' is actually going to be straightforward. This episode will, I think, be about exactly what the title implies. It'll probably focus on the group on the island (hereafter referred to as the Islanders), and what happened to them after the Oceanic Six left, and the island ... disappeared? moved? Hopefully, that question will get answered. That word in the title, 'because', implies some interesting ideas. It could be as simple as, since the Islanders don't know about Ben's frozen donkey wheel, to their minds the events of last season's finale happened because the Oceanic Six left. Or ... does it imply that Ben's wheel wasn't the cause after all, or maybe not the full cause? Perhaps the island disappearing was due in part to the Oceanic Six leaving; if they hadn't left, probably something still would've happened but maybe it wouldn't have been so catastrophic.

Ep 2: "The Lie"

*Oceanic Six-centric, probably Jack and/or Kate (unless my theory about Ep 4 is correct, see below) - possibly Desmond-centric, just because we haven't had an episode about him in awhile.

I think this episode will focus on the Oceanic Six, assuming that the first is about the island. Since they will be shown back to back, it makes sense that one would be about the island and one would be about those off the island. Now, "The Lie" is a pretty ambiguous title and could really refer to anything. There are a lot of lies floating around in the Lost-verse. The title could refer to the lie(s) the Oceanic Six have to tell in order to preserve their cover story. I have a theory that it could be about Kate's errand for Sawyer - she'll probably have to lie to Jack to accomplish it. Or it could, of course, be something else that I haven't thought of yet.

Ep 3: "Jughead"

*Not sure; could be Hurley- or possibly Sayid-centric

This title intrigued me. It's just so ... weird. Of course, the immediate association is with Jughead from Archie comics. If that's the association that the producers are going for, I think the episode will probably be about Hurley, as he seems to be the most likely character to be associated with a comic. Also, he's always been a little bit of the goofy sidekick (although displaying more of a serious side as of late). Also, we know from the trailer that there will be a scene with Hurley shooting a gun off a balcony; could this be the episode? However, when I heard this title, it made me think of "Jarhead", a movie that came out a few years ago about soldiers in Iraq. If that's the association to be made (admittedly a bit of a stretch), then I think the episode could be about Sayid's exploits as Ben's personal soldier (plus, he was a soldier in the past). And of course, if Sayid is there, then Ben will probably be featured as well.

Ep 4: "The Little Prince"

*Aaron-centric (which would mean "The Lie" is probably not Kate-centric since this episode would probably prominently feature Kate as well)

"The Little Prince", in real life, is a famous French children's book wherein the narrator meets the titular prince (who is a child) and visits his home asteroid. It's really quite a profound little book; I recommend either reading it or the Wikipedia plot summary. There could be a lot of tie-ins between the book and this episode. Being that the 'Little Prince' of the book is a child, this episode is most likely to be about Aaron. This could be the episode where we see the scene from the trailer where Aaron asks Kate where they're going and she says they're going on vacation (obviously, they're really going back to the island). But, would the Oceanic Six really be returning to the island this early in the season? Perhaps this episode will reveal more about Aaron's growing up between the time that the Oceanic Six leave the island and when we saw Aaron last season as a toddler.

Key lines from "The Little Prince" that could have tie-ins with 'Lost':

"One cannot see well except with the heart; the essential is invisible to the eyes."
"You become responsible, forever, for what you have tamed."
"It is the time you have spent with your rose that makes your rose so important."

Ep 5: "This Place Is Death"

*Islanders-centric (could be anyone, my picks are Juliet or Sawyer - Juliet, because she is the resident doctor, and Sawyer because he seems to be the de facto leader)

Perhaps I'm oversimplifying, but it seems pretty obvious to me that 'place' refers to the island. And since it's being referred to as 'death', perhaps someone is going to bite the dust in this episode. I've heard rumors that someone major is going to die in this season. Or, could be several people (probably mostly red-shirts) die due to an epidemic, effects of the island moving, whatever. Another idea is that Claire, if she is in fact already dead as most of us think, finally realizes she's dead and/or everyone else does, too. If I was living in a place where death quite literally walked around, I'd probably say that it was death, too.

Ep 6: "The Life and Death of Jeremy Bentham"

*Locke-centric - duh

This is probably the most obvious title and the least needing of an explanation. It appears we will finally get our answers as to why and how Locke left the island, became Jeremy Bentham, and ultimately died.

So, what do my fellow 'Lost' fanatics think? I'm especially intrigued by the idea of "The Little Prince" coming into play - if you've read it, I'd love to discuss it further.

First Season 5 Trailer!

I am so psyched for the new season! The thing that separates him though is that the tone and feel of the column steers eerily toward the way our own conversations about Lost break down. The recap each week isn't a simple condensed version of the narrative. Instead Doc points out intricacies and insights that we might've missed the first time around. The column is rife with theories and musings on the lore of the island and the future of the characters.

The best part though is that Doc's position with EW allows him access to the production team that you and I simply dream of. For instance, before almost every episode, Doc speaks with either Damon Lindelof or Carlton Cuse about the upcoming episode. During the 4-week break, Doc visited the set of Lost in Hawaii and interviewed many of our favorite actors. He even got to stand atop the sub!

Simply put though, Doc is a fan just like the rest of us. He may have all the cool access and secrets, but he doesn't know what's going to happen on the show, and ultimately, he is on the same wonderful literary journey as us. So check out his column and read some back issues, you might catch something you missed before.

Oh, and be sure to watch this video, it is an interview with Josh Holloway and Michael Emerson on the set of Ben's house.

The physics of 'Lost'

I think we can all agree last night's episode ("The Constant") was a total 'OMG WHAT IS GOING ON?????' episode. It was amazing and definitely lived up to the hype - I'm very excited about this season (even though it's going to be short...). Fee free to bring up whatever you want, but there are two things I found interesting that I think bear mentioning (and more discussion).

First, in Hurley's flash-forward, when he is in the police station - He sees a "vision" (or whatever) of Charlie in the water, swimming toward him. I didn't catch it while watching, but there's something written on his hand; you can see it very clearly here.

Interesting, no? =)

Second, and much more puzzling - when Hurley finds Jacob's cabin. We see a dude, who is assumed to be Jacob, sitting in the rocking chair, and then an eye flashes at the window (presumably Locke's). I found a screen capture, and the dude in the chair is NOT Jacob.

It's hard to tell who it is, really - speculation is a skinnier Christian Shephard. If Christian really has been on the island all this time, alone, it makes sense that he'd have lost a lot of weight (not to mention that whole being dead thing ... tends to make one lose weight, too).

Opinions on this? And other stuff?

Also, if you have not seen the last "Lost" mobisode (or web episode), it sheds some light on Christian Shephard's fate and lends credibility to the idea that he is indeed alive in some form or another. Here's a link to said mobisode.

And finally, the Oceanic Airlines commercial that aired after "Lost" during "Eli Stone" (which, by the way, was a pretty weird show). Pretty interesting stuff, I'd say.

Will Eight Be Enough

Here is an intresting article I found in the USA TODAY
--Leona

Viewers will have to decide whether Lost is half-empty or half-full when the ABC adventure-drama returns for its fourth season Thursday (9 ET/PT). Because of the Hollywood writers' strike, only eight of 16 planned episodes have been produced. Cast members say that ABC's decision to provide some Lost rather than none is smart and that they are pleased with a quickened pace and more answers to Lost's mysteries. "We're all going to be disappointed that there are only eight instead of 16, but the eight episodes are amazing, and I think fans will be very satisfied," says Yunjin Kim, who plays Sun, the pregnant wife of Jin (Daniel Dae Kim). "I feel like this season all the episodes are self-contained. The speed of the story is faster. Each episode contains a question and an answer, finally. So there's a lot of satisfaction." That approach may be the result of the unusual decision to set an end date for a hit series, with 48 episodes over three seasons. Knowing when the story concludes (which may be reflected in the title of the one-hour season-opener, "The Beginning of the End") has helped writers map out a faster, more focused pace, says Matthew Fox, who plays Jack Shephard, the reluctant leader of the survivors of the crash of Oceanic Flight 815. "Lost is a story with a beginning and an end. Knowing he's got 48, (co-creator Damon Lindelof) can make each installment move the narrative forward to that conclusion with momentum," Fox says. Based on Lost's previous production schedule, five or six more episodes likely could be produced by the end of May if the writers' strike is settled by mid-February. Lost ended last May with a jolt, opening the door to the castaways' possible rescue while adding a twist, a first flash-forward after three seasons of signature character flashbacks.

•The island update: Hurley (Hugo Reyes) saved three survivor colleagues from the Others, a mysterious island group at odds with the Oceanic passengers. Jack contacted an offshore freighter, and he and other stranded island dwellers were waiting for its crew to rescue them. And, just before drowning, another colleague, Charlie (Dominic Monaghan), passed on the message that the boat people weren't who the islanders thought.
That leads to a big season-opening question, one that will divide the islanders as four strangers arrive: Are they coming to hurt or to help?

•The future revelation: In a surprise directional change praised by cast and TV critics, Lost's May finale looked ahead to find that Jack and Kate (Evangeline Lilly), and possibly some others from the island, made it back to civilization.
The episode ended with a bearded, substance-abusing Jack raising more questions by imploring Kate: "We were not supposed to leave. … We have to go back, Kate."
Other questions hover: Who will leave the island, and who will stay? What will become of the pregnant Sun on an island where expectant mothers die? How will the romantic possibilities play out? Of course, Lost's big questions — what and where is the island, and why are these people there? — remain. (ABC will repeat the two-hour finale Wednesday at 8 ET/PT and air a series recap Thursday at 8.)

After averaging 15.9 million and 15.4 million viewers in its first two years, Lost fell to 13.8 million last season. (Lost is the top show in time-shifted viewing, ABC says.)
A complex, serialized show such as Lost loses some of its audience via attrition, but many viewers and critics blamed a six-episode fall 2006 arc they say had too much of the Others, not enough of the first-year regulars and too little in the way of action and answers.
A longer episode allotment in the spring received a much better critical response, and the season finale (13.9 million viewers) gave Lost its largest audience in more than three months. That led to the decision to run its 16 episodes consecutively this season.
But if this season also ends up divided, cast members say, the eight episodes will stand up better because they have lots of action and all the regulars are featured. (Lost's writers would not discuss the season because of the strike; ABC execs declined to be interviewed.)
Elizabeth Mitchell, who plays Juliet, one of the Others, likens the literature-referencing series to a novel. "I'm reading this book, Orley Farm. The first 150 pages are all setup. You're like, 'Where are the people I care about?' Then, all of a sudden, the book takes off. I feel that's what happened in Season 3. The writers laid their groundwork. And it hits the ground running" this season.

Lost could benefit from the strike, too, since there is less scripted competition. With time slots available because other shows have only reruns, it was moved from Wednesday, American Idol's regular night, to Thursday, and from 10 ET/PT to 9, an hour with more viewers.
In addition to new characters from the freighter, Michael (Harold Perrineau), who left the island with son Walt earlier, will return. Some on the island, most recently Locke (Terry O'Quinn) in the season finale, have seen a vision of Walt (Malcolm David Kelley).
Michael Emerson, who plays the spooky Others leader Ben, says that this season not only keeps up last season's momentum, but that the flash-forward opens great creative opportunities. "None of us knew what was going on until we saw the broadcast. I thought 'Hallelujah! This is going to make this show.' "

The future perspective is "how they're going to spin it out to be suspenseful and dramatic. Who has gotten off the island and at what price?" he says. "Now, there are these bittersweet notes of regret and missed opportunity that will come into play. To the extent the island was some crucible in which people could hope for redemption, maybe not everyone was redeemed, at least not happily."

Michael Emerson interview

Here is a recent interview with Michael Emerson. It got snubbed in the drama category for a second year. I am only comforted by the fact that "House" did get nominated.

However ... Michael Emerson and Terry O'Quinn are both up for Best Supporting Actor-Drama! Just for fun, let's have a Lost blog poll - who do you want to win the Emmy, Michael or Terry? Personally, I'm pulling for good ol' Locke. Not that M.E.'s acting hasn't been great - it has. But T.O. has been consistently amazing over 3 seasons, and has yet to be recognized for it. He truly brings Locke to life. He can make you understand perfectly what Locke is feeling or thinking with just a look. T.O. should definitely be recognized for creating one of the most complex and interesting characters on TV.

But, that's just my opinion. They call them 'mobisodes' (which I thought at first meant Lost was the Mafia). The full cast will appear, and accoording to our good friends Cuse and Lindelof, the mobisodes will reveal info that is not in the regular show. Thankfully, the episdoes will all be available online after Verizon users get to see them first. I hope this will happen soon so we can have some Lost before the Season 3 DVD release and before Season 4 starts.

Season 3 DVD and other miscellaneous news

So the season 3 DVD is not going to be out until Dec. - that makes me a sad panda. I was hoping for a Lost marathon of all 3 seasons over the summer (or at least the 3rd one, for a refresher). However, I guess this is for the best - we can marathon-watch season 3 in December and be ready for season 4 in February =).

Also, in other Lost news, some of our favorite Losties all have movies coming out in the near future. Donnie and I saw a preview for Matthew Fox's movie, "Vantage Point" (coming out in Feb.), which looks awesome. Naveen Andrews, Evangeline Lilly, and Josh Holloway also have roles in upcoming movies. See this article for more info. Also, a more recent article says that Emilie de Ravin (Claire) and Harold Perrineau (Michael) are in a movie together. Hopefully, Harold will have more to do than just yell, "WAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLTT!!!" and "They took my son!".

Jack's newspaper clipping and Ben's diary

I thought you guys might enjoy these.
Credit: LostEasterEggs

even the prop guys are sucked in

Notice the heading at the top of the schematics. In the wake of my awe-induced stare, I went to the Promised Lan. At this event, I spoke to fellow disciples of Damon Lindelof. When approaching the Jacob episode, they sought to understand the deep biblical connection to the name Jacob, something that had not yet crossed my mind. But it makes so much sense.

In the Bible, as Jacob came to the end of his days, his eyes began to wane. When Joseph brought in his two sons to receive they're blessing, Jacob crossed his arm to bless the children in reverse order. As Joseph questioned this on account of his blindness, Jacob replied that he knew what he was doing.

In the same way, it seems that Ben expected to receive the blessing of Jacob to continue his Steward-of-Gondor-like leadership role of the Others. However, it is obvious that he did not. I think the fact that Locke heard anything is an indication of Jacob's blessing over him. It is obvious from Locke's varied past, that he is destined to be "special," and this is a manifestation of this.

Locke, Jacob, and the smith

Recently, a friend mine and fellow lost lover, had a thought which, after much conversation, has grown into a theory we think could be the ultimate answer to our questions.

Since the beginning of the show, music has been an intergral part of lost. Songs featured and referenced in the show have shed light on many mysteries. Now I belive one song may hold the answer's to many of the most pressing mysteries.

John Jacob Jingleheimer Smith,
His name is my name too.
Whenever we go out
The people always shout,
"There goes John Jacob Jingleheimer Smith."
Da, da, da, da, da, da, da, da
John Jacob Jingleheimer Schmidt,
His name... [repeat]

Here we have conclusive proof that not only are Locke and Jacob the same person, but that they also manifest themselves in our beloved Smith, and, in this form, they will be the promised messiah of the island.
The song is sung from the perspective of Locke, as he describes his true purpose on thee island. "John Jacob Jingleheimer Smith, His name is my name too." The first line of the song show us that John and Jacob have the same name, and that John's true name is not Locke. As we continue we read the lines "Whenever we go out/ The people always shout, 'There goes John Jacob Jingleheimer Smith.' " These contain obvious messianic prophesies. The symbiont entity John/Jacob (Jocob, Jacohn, John Smith) is the savior of the island, and when they got out, the people will shout "There goes John Jacob Jingleheimer Smith."
Da, da, da, da, da, da, da, da. Notice also the eight da's, which hold obvious numerlogical meaning to lost.
Lastly the song repeats itself, with each successive verse becoming softer with a greater emphasis on the name of the messiah. This represents a time loop. All of the losites are in a time loop, as evidenvced by Desmond's visions/memories of previous journeys through the loop. Each time the loop repeats, there is more emphasis on the John/Jacob messiah, until the final verse, which is the loop of time that we are seeing in the show. In the final iteration of the events, John/Jacob is given the greatest emphasis in the song and he finally fulfills his duties as saviour of the islannd.
Still, why is Jacob invisible. This is because, though Locke and Jacob are the same, they are also twins (Jacob is the evil one). They were separated at birth when Jacob was sent to the island. Since his arrival on the island he has been studying to become what his name declares that he is, a Smith. As we learn from our most beloved Smith, the Poopsmith, Smith's are required to take a vow of silence. On the island this includes all communication through sound and sight. So Jacob has trained his sneak skill from his youth, so that he can move around the island unseen, and so keep his vow. This is why when Jacob breaks his vow by speaking to Locke, he becomes visible. (Also I will assume that what Ben mistook for Jacob speaking to him was actually his fillings picking up the television signals of reruns of Jackie Chan Adventures)

Locke is Jacob?

Someone made a comparison pic of Locke and Jacob -- http://server7.pictiger.com/img/73224/picture-hosting/-users-kurtmarquart-desktop-snapshot-20070509214722--copy-.php.

Maybe Jacob is a manifestation of an alternate Locke personality? And Ben shot him to prevent Locke from figuring that out? It's not too terribly far-fetched; people seem to manifest things from their past on the island (Jack's dad, Kate's black horse, Ben's mom...). Maybe Ben is smarter than we think and has figured all this out. That's right, our little island in the South Pacific. Except, I believe that it's literally in the South Pacific. Crazy as it may seem, I believe our Lost Island is a hybrid between the city of Atlantis and the dome used in the Truman Show. My reasons for believing this are threefold:

1. The Submarine- This is probably the most overlooked argument because it seems so simple. In theory this would be the only way to reach an underwater facility. I realize that the obvious objection is that planes, boats, and balloons seem to be viable options for transit to the Island, but if that is the case, why do the Others believe that they are now without a means of reaching the outside world. Which leads me to point 2.

2. The Plane Crash- I know that Ben is not the most trustworthy of individuals, but if we can believe that he was legitimately unaware of the coming of the Losties via plane, then we must believe that the plane found at the bottom of the sea trench referred to by Locke's father and the strange unnamed helicopter pilot is in fact real. I can't explain everything, nor will I attempt to. But simplistically, if a plane fell into the water, sank a long way, and breached through whatever this Atlantis Island is using to stabilize itself for pressure, then it might seem as if it was crashing.

Note: I can name the hole in this. The Losties have memories of sudden plane trouble and then crashing. Also, again, realistically, the plane supposedly fell apart according to Kate's vision, therefore, they would not have survived a sea voyage. But I believe there is a more supernatural explanation anyway.

3. The Weather. It is obvious by Dharma Orientation videos that weather was a part of the intended experimentation of the Island. They seem to wield control over it, as the rain is more sudden than could ever be explained normally.

There are many other things that support this theory. Ben doesn't worry that Michael, an experienced sailor could ever find his way back. In reality, survival demands that Michael and Walt would've had less than 500 miles of range before they would die of starvation. If they were picked up, satellites could find an Island, unless it was underwater.

I believe that passage to this Island demands some sort of supernatural explanation. It does seem that all who come should have died. A boat crash, a plane crash, a balloon crash, a helicopter crash. We all know most of those couldn't be coincidence. But if the residents of the Island know of only one way off it, I believe that Michael and Walt are going to be hitting the dome wall soon.

We were right...

... Naomi does not say 'Thank you' to Mikhail after he treats her. Here's what she really says: "After Mikhail and Desmond treat Naomi's wound, she says something in Portuguese not spelled out in the captions. It is not 'Thank you' as Mikhail claims. Instead, it sounds like 'Eu não estou só' which is Portuguese (spoken with a Brazilian accent) for 'I am not alone'." (Lostpedia).

So ... did Naomi bring others with her? Are they still around, or did they die when the helicopter crashed and Naomi just doesn't know it yet?

Also ... if Naomi is Brazilian, could she perhaps have a connection with Paulo?

I definitely recommend reading the Lostpedia article on last night's episode - there are several other interesting things there (ex., Sun's conception date might not be accurate). It also raises the possibility that Kate could be pregnant - Juliet did say men's sperm count on the island is 5 times higher than normal. If this is true, and Kate has now slept with Sawyer twice (that we know of), it is entirely possible she could be pregnant.

Sun and Mittelwerk?

According to Lostpedia, the following conversation took place between Thomas Mittelwerek and a man named Minsu during the Lost Experience.

MITTELWERK: Minsu, so great to see you.
MINSU: Dr. Mittelwerk. type='text'>Interesting theory

Here's a theory I found on the Fark.com Lost discussion from last night. I'm not sure how much truth it has, but it's food for thought.

THE ANSWER TO THE SHOW: The island is the remnants of a civilization in Earth’s future (for the sake of this theory lets say the events on the island are taking place in the Earth year 3000). The island natives are dying and are seeking a way to survive and renew the human populace. Either the island natives found a wormhole (on, above, or near the island) that allows them to time travel back to our present (2001) where they have searched out the help of scientists and the Dharma Initiative. Or the Dharma initiative found this wormhole in our present and has exploited the island to the point that they created an “incident” that destroyed this future civilization. Here are the pieces that led me to the above: FOUR TOED STATUE: Scientists have said that the pinky toe on present day humans is slowly receding and over time we will evolve to only have four toes. The four toed statue signifies the remnants of a FUTURE society. NOT a society of the past. THE SUBMARINE: Ben has said that the submarine, if destroyed, would take away the illusion that his volunteers can leave the island. Juliet was drugged prior to her departure to the island in the present, but awoke on the island in the submarine. She was placed in the submarine to again create the illusion that she traveled to this island (this future Earth) through conventional means. But rather, she flew, paddled, or walked through a wormhole that took her from our present to the future Earth. If she had been aware of where she was going (and more importantly WHEN in time she was going) she may not have gone willingly and the island natives need her skills too much to lose her. DESMOND AND THE TURNING OF THE KEY: Upon turning the key Desmond went back in time. So we are quite aware that wormholes (i.e. time travel) are apparent in the universe of this narrative. Desmond is warned by the old woman that events are predestined and must happen a certain way; You cannot change events. She says this so that he does not effect the space time continuum and change the present Earth in a way that would prevent certain 815ers from getting on the plane. Everyone on that plane was supposed to be on it for a reason to the benefit of the future earth civilization in the year 3000. BEN WON’T LEAVE THE ISLAND FOR HIS CANCER AND HE WON’T LET ANYONE ELSE LEAVE: If Ben leaves the island (future Earth) to go to our present or another period in the past, or if he lets an 815er go back to our present or the past, it may change the space time continuum and destroy the universe. Juliet and the 815ers are believed to be dead in our present and if they go back, it changes the the history of events and alters the civilization in the year 3000 on the island. Possibly for the worse. If you have ever seen the movie “Millenium” this will help you to understand this piece of the puzzle. BEN AND JULIET KNOW THINGS ABOUT THE 815ers THAT NO ONE WOULD KNOW: As the island is Earth of the future, and assuming the island natives can go through a wormhole that allows them to go through time, they can collect information and go to moments in the lives of the 815ers at a moments notice. They can be eyewitnesses to the events in the lives of the 815ers in our present or any period before they boarded the Oceanic flight. In our present, when the plane disappeared, the world believed that all the 815ers died. Perhaps, for years following their disappearance, various info on the lives of these people became public via news outlets. The 815ers life stories became documented and were easily accessible to an island native traveling back in time. As the island natives of Earth in the year 3000 could go back in time, they can collect all this information that became newscoops. THE 815ers ARE HANDPICKED AND ARE CONNECTED: Everyone of the 815ers has good reason never to return to our present. Whether it be disease or skeleton’s in the closet.
Ultimate Theory Revised Part 4 colon Electric Boogaloo colon Long Title

Ok, so many thanks to Blake for giving me the opportunity to write this unique post on the proposed fate of the rest of our Losties.

To recap, we have met the man known as Alvar Hanso. Then we learned about the mysterious group of scientists known as the CC. Just this past week, we saw what role our survivors would play in the CC. But if the CC is a small group of minds (very similar to the plot from Minority Report) that guides everything on and off the Island, what then of the other 38 survivors of Flight 815?

Well, another portion of the Ultimate Theory that is unclear is the question of 'why does the world need the CC? What purpose does it serve outside of bringing (seemingly) random strangers to an Island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean?' Another branch theory from the Ultimate Theory is the thought that the electromagnet used by Dharma to bring down the plane and house the CC would one day be used to destroy the rest of human civilization. Not directly, but through the use of a massive EMP to disable and corrupt all technology throughout the world. Computers would burn out, causing massive pandemonium at financial institutions. Militaries all throughout the world would be lowered to very simple weaponry similar to those used in World War 1. It would take decades to restore electricity because mankind has become so dependent upon it. And planes would fall out of the sky...

As we come back to the Island, we see that if we remove some of our obvious CC candidates (Walt, Locke, Desmond) we are left with a rather interesting group of people. There are representatives from every race and major continent on the planet (with the possible exception of South America, though that could be another survivor we never meet). There is a seemingly equal balance between males and females. As we narrow down our criteria, we see that there are many of the required elements for a proper culture.

We have the doctor, the natural-born but hesitant leader who was forged through issues with his father. Kate and Sawyer, both hardened criminals with natural cunning and survival instincts. An architect (who I believe will return rather soon), scientists, teachers, musicians, priests, fishermen, soldiers, rich, poor, young, older. Cultures, languages, and traditions from all around the world could be preserved flawlessly. Truly, this is an amazing cross-section of individuals. I do not believe that it is a coincidence that these people were placed on this Island together, seemingly at random.

The theory proposes that these people will begin a new culture within the bounds of a cataclysmic event that ruins the rest of the world. Think of the Island as the ark, and the rest of the world caught in the flood of their own self-destruction.

If two geeks can revise this theory and come up with something based on one man's work, how much better is the real story done by experienced professionals. And they say the writers have no idea what they're doing :)

Coming soon: Part 5

The Ultimate LOST Addict Experience

As your teacher, friend, fellow addict, I feel obligated to expand your horizons. Most of you already know about the quintessential LOST website--www.4815162342.com You've rambled around the General Forum (and perhaps others, as well) and have been alternately inspired and bothered. Let me hasten to add that, unless you've been in the VIP forum, you have not taken full advantage of this site. Membership in the VIP forum is only $14.95 a year and is worth three times that much. In this forum you can always be assured of intelligent discussion. Among the members, who have become good friends of mine, are:

a fellow, who just graduated from Princeton and is now doing post-doctoral work at Harvard,
a young lady, who is working on a PhD in chemistry in Scotland,
a fellow who is finishing up his PhD and is going to work for NASA,
a computer programmer in Brazil, whose posts are nothing short of brilliant.

In the VIP forum, there is a Role Play which has been going on for many months now. The first guy in this list is writing it. It's the story of what you would do if you were lost. We've (yes, you know I joined in on this) created our own characters and have interwoven our story with the "real" story of the show. New players enter all the time and I think you would find it a rewarding experience--at least those of you that I know like to write. At the very least, you should join VIP. If I were smart enough to send you a link, I would, but I don't know how. (Maybe one of you could give some instruction on this, please.) But VIP Forum is right there in front your eyes, when you log on to the Numbers site.

That's my two cents for today. Well, okay, I might have two more cents later, since it's spring break and I have time to think.

Ultimate Theory Revised (Part 3)

Original Ultimate Theory
Expanded Ultimate Theory

Ultimate Theory Revised (Part 1)
Ultimate Theory Revised (Part 2)

Part 3: The Losties

"Do you really think all this is an accident? That we, a group of strangers, survived? Many of us with just superficial injuries? Do you think we crashed on this place by coincidence? Especially this place? We were brought here for a purpose, for a reason. All of us. Each one of us was brought her for a reason." -John Locke

One of the more interesting dichotomies discussed on Lost is fate vs. free will. Locke is the perfect example of this paradox. Early on he asks Jack the intriguing question, "What if everything that happened here, happened for a reason?" And yet he repeatedly states his motto of "Don't tell me what I can't do!" Locke is convinced both of his own free will and the fate of the Island.

Each one of the survivors makes choices that affect everyone else. Yet it is constantly hinted that every single choice made is really part of a grand scheme or fate. Both fate and free will play a role in Flight 815. Each of our losties chose to enter the plane, yet each was meant to be on that flight.

But why were they brought to the Island? I believe the answer is linked to our beloved Collective Consciousness (hereafter referred to as "the CC"). In part 2 of this theory I explain that the CC was responsible for bringing the losties to the Island. It is also possible (and probable in my opinion) that the survivors of Flight 815 were brought to continue the work of the CC. Our losties are meant to become the future CC.

Walt is perhaps the greatest piece of evidence for this. He has been referred to as "special." His adopted father, Brian, said, "There's something about him. Sometimes, when he's around, things happen. He's different somehow." When he was still living with Brian and his mother, an Australian Bronze Cuckoo crashed into their window and died after Walt was looking at its picture and attempting to show it to Brian. Walt was able to throw Locke's knife with amazing accuracy; all he had to do was "use his mind's eye." He seemed to feel a certain connection to the Island, for he burnt his dad's raft with the one excuse, "I like it here." Walt appeared multiple times in visions to Shannon, and Sayid claimed that he also saw the boy. And most disturbingly, Walt somehow knew about the hatch after simply touching Locke's arm and told him, "Don't open it. Don't open that thing."

Walt's special powers and abilities seem to eerily mirror those of the CC. He can guide objects, cause visions (or at least appear to others), and see the future. Walt is "different" for a reason.

Consider Desmond. A man with apparently no special abilities now has the ability to see the future. This is of course a direct parallel to Ms. Hawking, one member of the current CC that we have actually seen on the show.

Soon to come: Part 4

It's been awhile since I've had (some of) you in British Literature and studied the sonnet with you. I never though I could write one till someone issued the challenge. I was happy to discover that I had succeeded. So here, for your enjoyment, are some LOST sonnets--by that I mean some sonnets inspired by LOST. The sonnets are not LOST, else you could not read them here.

Mrs. Christian Shephard

She met him at a party Christmas Eve.
They stepped outside to watch the falling snow.
It took her scarce a moment to believe
She’d found the man she’d dreamed of long ago.

But all too soon her dream began to fade.
His shielded heart she could not fully pierce.
His guarded soul she never could invade.
His darkened mind grew cynical and fierce.

She’d hoped the son, blessed with his father’s mind,
Would touch the heart that seemed so scarred and seared.
When to his caring son he yet was blind,
His wife was forced to face what she had feared.

And when at last there came the final rift,
She sacrificed her husband’s greatest gift.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Love Quadrangle
Escaping to the jungle dense and green,
Jack, kneeling, hoped to straighten out his mind.
And wond’ring at a place he’d never seen,
He saw a face he judged to be most kind.
He asked for help to sew his open wound
And, smiling, Kate asked if he’d go for “black.”
And once these moments bound their hearts for good,
They looked ahead, but kept on looking back.
And Sawyer, hurt and lonely all his life,
Observed in Kate a spirit like his own,
And sought to win her proud and stubborn heart
But found small chance to be with her alone.
The battered cop stepped in where Kate refused.
Then Sawyer, winning, found he had been used.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

John Locke

Cast off by those who rightly called him “son”
(His father—calloused, cold, a heart unmoved;
His mother—fragile, frail, a mind undone)
He always felt his worth to be unproved.

A brilliant man with mind and senses keen,
His destiny still waiting to be claimed,
He worked at simple jobs with skills unseen,
And fought the stigma of his being maimed.

Australia beckoned as a shining hope
That he at last could be like other men.
With rugged life he knew that he could cope.
Denied his chance, he saddened once again.

Forced on a plane that never was to land,
When he revived, he found that he could stand.

I'm bringing flashy back(s)...you other losties don't know how to act.

First of all, let me discuss an idea that has been brewing in my mind like a "witch's brue." Ok, so as anyone who has watched Lost can tell you, the entire show conforms to a general template. Flashback and event on the Island that corresponds with the flashback. Typically, the character remembers certain events, and that stirs up an emotion that has been dormant, or causes them to react differently than they normally would. Every show is a practical example of this principle.

Jack is a great example of this. Jack looks back to the events with his father and his father, divorce, trip to Thailand, and he reacts to a situation on the Island accordingly. He becomes bold where he was weak, he generally acts contrary to his normal character.

My theory is that the Island (or CC as I'd like to think of it) is triggering these flashbacks intentionally. I don't know the mechanics of it, but I've seen the evidence of it. Think first to the Locke flashback early on in Season 3 where he was living in the marijuana commune. At the end, in his flashback, he determined that he was a farmer, not a hunter because he could not shoot the undercover cop. Eko had a strange look on his face and stated, "you are a hunter John."

It is obvious that Eko knew his thoughts, but I think this could be caused by the Island. It's also strange that the flashback the person happens to recall is always relevant to the situation they are about to face in the near future.

I think the Island triggers these flashbacks to illicit reactions so that the Losties can be studied. I think that the obvious allusions to the psychological nature of DHARMA and the Others lends very heavily to this. This could be why the Losties had their entire lives influenced by DHARMA indirectly so that they would have certain experiences that the Island could test on.

Also, another interesting thing that I've been pondering is the Charlie/Desmond theory. As you all know, Desmond has taken it upon himself to save Charlie from all of these envisioned deaths. However, now that we are on the fourth attempt upon Charlie's life, I began looking for a common thread. I have found it, and plan to crochet it into a nice stocking, or a winter coat. The similarities in all of the possible death scenarios all stem to Claire. More specifically, Claire's sense of guilt.

Think about it: if Charlie got struck by lightning in Claire's tent, she would've felt guilty; if Charlie had drowned saving Claire, she would've blamed herself; if Charlie would've died attempting to grab the bird, Claire would've taken fault. When Charlie went joyriding in the Dharmamobile, he was safe because Claire could not trace herself back to that accident.

I'm very interested to see how this is going to continue on. I don't know if Charlie will die this season (or at least for this small story arc) because I think innate paranoia will set in. He will become so scared of Claire that he will avoid her, creating a newfound tension on their relationship.

You know, I think that sounds like a fascinating psychological study. Maybe now we know why Desmond has his powers. :)

Bee is here

I would like to thank you for welcoming me to your blog. He said that for 3 years straight, he took the medicine faithfully, and now he has the ability to travel through time/see the future. Keep in mind, he does not control that ability, but he has it.

Walt is another great example. He also displays amazing abilities that seemed to be unlocked when he was captured (and presumably injected). This is evidenced by the statement by Benry when he was giving Walt back to Michael. "We got more out of him than we could have ever hoped for."

Presumably, they are attempting to do the same to Aaron and maybe to an extent Claire. Some people that fit this bill have immediately shown signs of increased potential while others have not. I think that this injection has something to do with the strange powers that people are becoming imbued with.

OR

The Others are right and there is actually a sickness. Not a life-threatening virus like Rousseau led us to believe, but something that attacks slower, and perhaps non-invasive. Maybe the Others, who are there to study the effects of the Island actually believe that the medicine will prevent people from falling under the spell of the Island. Perhaps also, the medicine a clever ruse used to unlock the full potential of the Island's abilities.

Whether we believe in the Island (naturally or personified) or the Others and a CC, one thing is clear: Nothing is clear.

Ultimate Theory Revised (Part 2)

Original Ultimate Theory
Expanded Ultimate Theory

Ultimate Theory Revised (Part 1)

Part 2: Collective Consciousness

Andrew Smith described the Collective Consciousness as:

...a group of scientists with their noggins hooked up to wires... in the hatch... behind the concrete... With the technology hinted at in the Orientation film (and Hurley's comic), these scientists are able to remotely - via electromagnetism - control objects, such as cars, galleons, planes, lottery balls, and also induce vision in minds of a weakened state, such as those that are drunk, drugged, exhausted, or sick.

This main thrust of the Collective Consciousness (hereafter referred to as "the CC") is simply that there is a group of people behind the scenes controlling everything. Andrew thought that they were in the hatch (this has never been disproved, but I have my doubts). More likely, the CC is roaming the earth, controlling everything. In fact, we have actually seen a member of the CC, Ms. Hawking.

Ms. Hawking knows things that she shouldn't, things that normal people don't know. She knows Desmond's name. She knows the future. She even knows what the future could be if people choose to do things differently. ("And if you don't do those things... every single one of us will die.") She also seems to know that Desmond has gone back in time. Ms. Hawking seems to be outside of the normal time constraints that bind the world. This only makes sense, for "Only fools are enslaved by time and space."

The CC is the entire reason that our Losties are on the Island. Now, I know that it can be truly said that the plane crashed because Desmond missed the button, but that's not the only force the caused the plane to crash. Something kept them alive; something made sure that there were no hair brushes on the plane; something brought the Losties to the Island. The fact that there is a viable scientific answer to the question doesn't mean that all other answers are ruled out. (The Pearl was monitoring the Swan, but the Swan's button was still real.)

In fact, this reveals the heart of many of the show's themes. Here we find that science finds its fulfillment in faith, and faith finds its fulfillment in science. The same can truly be said with black and white, fate and free will, life and death, dreams and reality, etc. Each dichotomy is resolved only when one sees each pair of views to be two sides of the same coin.

Soon to come: Part 3 "The Losties"

Tricia Tanaka Is Dead

From the title to Sawyer's awesome nicknames, I think we can agree that last night's episode was one of the funniest ever. In that spirit, I present to you a list of the nicknames and general funny lines Sawyer used last night (courtesy Lostpedia), along with a very funny pic.

*Sawyer calls Hurley "International House of Pancakes".
*Sawyer calls Hurley "Jumbotron".
*Sawyer called Charlie "Jiminy Cricket".
*Sawyer jokes that Jin is "Hooked on Phonics".
*Sawyer called Charlie "Oliver Twist".
*Sawyer refers to Roger as "Skeletor", which is a character from He-Man.
*Sawyer calls Hurley "Snuffy" (Aloysius Snuffleupagus from Sesame Street).<--Did anyone know Snuffleupagus had a first name??

Other funny moments: Hurley's mom covering Jesus' ears, (feel free to add more in comments)

Fun trivia: Tricia Tanaka, who is a news reporter, may be a reference to "Family Guy's" Asian Reporter Tricia Takanawa. We tend to think that author of this theory, Andrew Smith, captured some of the main answers and themes in Lost with amazing accuracy. But since the theory was written midway second season, it is a bit outdated. Therefore, I am beginning a series of posts that will attempt to present a more accurate and current version of Andrew Smith's original. (Donnie, if you wish to join in and write a few segments yourself, feel free to send me an email and we'll totally get this thing going.) I highly suggest reading the original theory as well as the expansion.

Part 1: Alvar Hanso

Meet Hans Ørsted:

Hans Ørsted was the scientist who discovered electromagnetism. One day when setting up materials for an experiment, he noticed that his compass moved off course when electricity flowed in the near wire from a battery he was using. This accidental observation eventually led him to publish his works and help the scientific world better understand the forces of electricity and magnetism. (For more see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hans_Oersted.)

Meet Hannes Alfvén

His contribution to science - mainly in the field of electromagnetism - revolutionized how scientists view the universe, winning a Nobel Prize on the way. He spoke English, German, French, Russian, and some Spanish and Chinese; and studied oriental philosophy and religion. Alfvén participated in a variety of social issues and worldwide disarmament movements. He wrote fiction: The Great Computer: A Vision (1968) telling the story of computers taking over the world. Alfvén also spent time in the Fiji Islands. (For more see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hannes_Alfven.)

Alfvén plus Hans Ø. equals Alvar Hanso.

(Just click to see larger view)

Alvar was convinced that the world would one day be destroyed (see Sri Lanka video). But there might be hope. Perhaps through scientific research a solution could be reached. With this in mind, he created the Hanso Foundation (anagram: Noah's Foundation). He funded a research team known as the Dharma Initiative. The purpose of this group was to save the world from destruction. Alvar knew of an island that would be perfect for the project.

How he knew about the island is still a bit of a mystery. We know through the Lost ARG that his grandfather, Magnus Hanso, was the captain of a boat that looks remarkably like the Black Rock. We also know from the map that was on the hatch wall that Magnus is buried on the island itself. Perhaps Magnus escaped the island and brought Alvar to it; perhaps Alvar was in search for his grandfather and stumbled upon the island in this pursuit. We really don't know. But we do know that the Island played apart in Alvar's history.

Soon to come: Part 2 "Collective Consciousness"

Stranger in a Strange Land

I was reading about last night's episode on Lostpedia.com and picked up some very interesting little tidbits about it.

*This is for you, Leona - When Achara's brother hands her the envelope, they are using a traditional Thai greeting - see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thai_greeting.

*Jack's tattoo does not literally translate to "He walks among us, but he is not one of us" as Isabel explains. It is taken from a poem by Chairman Mao Zedong, and translates correctly in Chinese to "Eagles high, cleaving sky." <--Is this what Jack meant when he told Isabel, "That's not really what it means"? Or is he referring to something else altogether?

*The title of the episode, "Stranger in a Strange Land" may refer to:
1) Exodus 2:22. The verse is "And she bare him a son, and he called his name Gershom: for he said, I have been a stranger in a strange land", 2) The name of a book written by Robert Heinlein: Stranger in a Strange Land, or 3) Any of three Stranger in a Strange Land songs by that title: one by Iron Maiden, one by U2, and one by Leon Russell.<--You Bible college students - get to looking up Gershom; see if he relates somehow =).

*Juliet's mark could be a reference to the Mark of Cain, from the story of Cain and Abel - Genesis 4:15 - "And the LORD set a mark upon Cain, lest any finding him should kill him." <--I find this very interesting. They acted like the mark was a punishment, but was it really for Juliet's protection so that no one in the future could punish her for the killing of Danny?

Just to clarify

So apparently these are two different people. We don't think it's Claire, as things have not been resolved with her baby yet. Charlie is now too obvious after last week's episode. Even though Desmond said he's going to die, that's just far too obvious for a show that likes to mess with our brains (see: last week's episode). No, we think the next character to die is ... Kate.

I know this is kind of a weird choice, but we have reasons. Think of all the female characters that have died thus far. What is the common thread among them (besides that they are all girls)? With the (possible) exception of Libby, all the girls that died, died after they slept with someone whom they were not married to. Think about it - Shannon died after sleeping with Sayid in the tent, Ana Lucia died after sleeping with Sawyer to get the gun. Libby is the only exception to this rule, but we don't know ... she and Hurley could have slept together and we just don't know it yet. Therefore, since Kate slept with Sawyer ... she's next. Apparently the island (or the Collective Consciousness, if you subscribe to that theory) is a very moral island (or CC) in that regard.

I also thought of this. This 'theme' or whatever you want to call it bears a resemblance to a theme expressed in horror movies. 'Scream' made fun of this so-called 'rule' of horror movies - whoever sleeps with someone in a horror movie dies; whoever remains celibate lives. For example, in 'Nightmare on Elm Street,' the first person to die is the girl who sleeps with her boyfriend right at the beginning of the movie. I think it's interesting that horror movies, of all genres, takes this approach. It seems to be a subtle condemnation of premarital sex. It's very interesting that 'Lost' is doing much the same thing; every woman who has slept with someone outside of marriage (with the exception, so far, of Kate) has died - I know 'Lost' is not horror, per se, but it does have some elements of the genre, including, apparently, this. Perhaps it's just a weird coincidence ... perhaps not.

This theme also expresses an oddity of our culture - women who sleep around are sluts, men who do so are heroes (I'm talking about society at large, not Christian society). Sawyer has slept with at least two women on the island now, and he's fine. Sayid has slept with someone, and he's fine, too. Their respective partners, on the other hand, (except Kate) are dead. I'm not a feminist by any means, but it's quite interesting how this happens.

Military Wings

As promised, from the first episode. My mom tends to think that Rousseau is an Other because of the strange holes in her story.

First of all, when we first meet Rousseau, she is torturing Sayid in an underground bunker. She is surrounded by a massive amount of equipment in what appears to be a pre-fabricated shelter. Obviously, it is not another hatch, but it is doubtful that Rousseau could have built a structure that elaborate, even though she had lived on the Island for 16 years. All of the equipment seems to be military based, so it could be abandoned surplus left behind after the "Incident".

Next, we see that Rousseau always shows up at very opportune times. Take for example the fact that the first time she appeared to the Losties as a whole, the whole "Claire's Baby" episode began to unfold. This of course ended up leading everyone off track so that the Others could take Walt. Rousseau convinced everyone that they wanted the "boy" but never specified it was Walt, leaving him unprepared. It could be that this was a manipulation of her desire for a child by the Others who were watching her, or a clever decoy.

Again, Rousseau shows up and delivers everyone favorite creepy guy: Henry Gale. Again, she could have been manipulated by Benry deliberately falling into her trap, or she could have been privy to the entire plan.

Personally, I tend to think that Rousseau is a part of a group of Rebel Others, intent on escaping from the civilized scientists we know on Alcatraz. Eyepatch man would probably be a part of this group, as would the group Jin and Eko saw leading the children (think teddy bear). There is far more to that theory, but that will have to wait for another post.

Til next time,

Lost on!

P.S. Interesting to note that Alex is inferred to be Henry's child, was Rousseau lying about her husband, or did Henry use Juliet's man pregnancy drug?

Desmond and Ms. Hawking

On Time

So time has been a big part of the last two episodes. Of course the theme of "time" has been hinted to before (the button every 108 minutes, Sawyer is seen reading A Wrinkle in Time, Hurley telling Sayid that the music on the radio could be from any time, etc.) , but Not in Portland and Flashes Before Your Eyes have taken this to a whole new level.

Not in Portland

First, we see see a character named Aldo. If the sound file from the film is played backwards one can clearly hear the words "Only fools are enslaved by time and space" repeated many times.

Ben asks Jack for "3 minutes" since he has only "27 minutes to live."

And the company that offered Juliet a job, Mittelos, is an anagram for "lost time."

Flashes Before Your Eyes

Well first off, Desmond can apparently see the future. This has been hinted to since the beginning of the season.

We see Desmond apparently go back in time to before he landed on the island.

Immediately Desmond is seen painting his flat with paint made by a company named "Future."

Most importantly Desmond is seen with an old woman named by our group as "Mother Other." The writers gave her another name though, Ms. Hawking. That's right, the same last name as Stephen Hawking (Aldo's guy).

Ms. Hawking is surrounded by clocks in her ring shop.

Ms. Hawking reveals that she too can see the future.

During the soccer match, an advertisement is seen for a fictional company known as "Kronos" which of course means "time."

So there you have it, about a billion references to time in these two episodes. I'm not sure what it all means, but I'm hooked.
